In India’s latest attempt to regulate the fast-growing gig economy sector, the Karnataka government unveiled a new scheme last week to grant health insurance coverage to gig workers in the state.

While the government does not have data on the exact number of gig workers active in Karnataka, the labour department estimates there to be at least 200,000 workers in the sector out of the state’s 64 million residents.
