Unlike many other jurisdictions, India’s courts have yet to fully grapple with the employment relationship between platform companies and gig economy workers. The state of Rajasthan aims to get ahead of that thorny debate by proposing a new law granting platform workers access to social security protections.
The Rajasthan Platform-based Gig Workers (Registration and Welfare) Bill 2023 aims to establish a social security and welfare fund worth INR200m, comprising statutory levies, contributions from individual platform-based gig workers, and state government grants.
