A requirement that third-country nationals pass an exam on basic Slovenian is discriminatory, the country’s equal opportunities ombudsman declared in late August.

Slovenia’s Labour Market Regulation Act covers all unemployed workers and entitles them to unemployment benefits provided that, among other criteria, they demonstrate basic understanding of the Slovene language. The Employment Service of Slovenia is responsible for helping jobseekers find employment and for keeping a register of unemployed persons.
