Women can now choose to work night shifts in India’s most populous state

New rules allowing women to work night shifts in factories could go some way towards increasing female participation in India’s labour force, so long as the country’s employers are willing to pay additional compliance costs.

Last month, India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, joined Maharashtra, Karnataka, Haryana, and Andhra Pradesh states in allowing factories to engage women employees in night shifts, from 7pm to 6am.
