India’s parliament this week passed a Bill to scrap three controversial farming laws aimed at reforming the country’s agricultural sector, bowing to pressure from farmers who protested for more than a year demanding that the laws be repealed.

The move highlights the possible challenges that could be in store for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government as it works on restructuring the nation’s tangled network of labour laws, which are also subject to ongoing reform.
