The British government has opened a consultation on re-introducing fees in the employment tribunal system less than a decade after a similar scheme was unanimously ruled unlawful by the UK Supreme Court.

Between 1964 and 2013, there was no charge payable when bringing employment tribunal claims. That changed under the coalition government in July 2013 with the introduction of a controversial fee regime that ultimately saw a 67% drop in tribunal claims being brought.
