New DoL rule will make it harder to classify US workers as contractors

Employers will find it much harder to treat workers as independent contractors if a new US Department of Labor rule that more broadly defines “employee” is approved.

In a return to Obama-era guidance, the new rule unveiled this week will consider workers who are “economically dependent” on a business to be company employees, entitling them to more benefits and legal protections under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
