Workers in Japan use less than two-thirds of their paid annual leave, a government survey of private-sector firms has found, highlighting ongoing work-life balance struggles in a country that is notorious for overworking.
The survey of 3,768 companies found employees took an average 62.1% of their entitled leave last year. Despite being a record high, up 3.8% from 2021, this year’s data shows Japan still has some way to go to meet the government’s goal of at least 70% paid leave use by 2025.
