Coinciding with International Women’s Day, Ireland will hold a referendum this Friday to decide on the role of women in Irish society.

Article 41.2 of the Irish constitution currently states that women working in the home are vital to the good functioning of society and should not be forced to enter the workplace and neglect their families.

“The state recognises that by her life within the home, woman gives to the state a support without which the common good cannot be achieved,” the article reads.
