How Brazilian justices extended maternity leave rights

Maternity leave has been constitutionally guaranteed to Brazilian women since 1988, but in a landmark decision last week the nation’s highest court extended that right to LGBTQ+ couples.

The case concerned Olívia Janequine, a public servant who worked for São Bernardo do Campo municipality, and her self-employed partner with whom she had a child.
