Millions of gig workers in the EU could be recognised as employees with rights to pensions, paid leave, unemployment and sickness benefits, and workplace accident insurance, after the European Commission agreed landmark new rules yesterday.

The proposals aim to stamp out what lawmakers describe as "bogus self-employment" among the growing number of gig workers using digital platforms.
