The European Commission has presented a pro-union draft directive that aims to ensure greater protection – from a labour law point of view – for drivers or couriers working through digital platforms.

The proposal should be an answer to a highly debated – especially before the labour courts – question: are riders subordinate employees, subject to the hierarchical power of the employer, or self-employed individuals?
