Included in the US Congress’ 2023 omnibus spending bill, the bipartisan Providing Urgent Maternal Protections for Nursing Mothers Act (PUMP Act) was passed on 23 December and signed into law by President Joe Biden six days later.
Aimed at closing the coverage gap of existing protections for nursing mothers, the PUMP Act clarifies when pumping time is paid or unpaid, and provides remedies for employees that face violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
