The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has warned that using biometrics to monitor employee movements may be in breach of data protection regulations, amid heightening fears for workers’ privacy rights.

On Friday, the data protection watchdog told public services subcontractor Serco, its subsidiaries Serco Leisure and Serco Jersey, and seven associated community leisure trusts, to stop using facial recognition software and fingerprint scanning to monitor staff attendance.
