With competition for skills fierce and a new generation of workers asking what companies can do for them, employers must reconsider how they reward talent.

In the US and Europe, millions of workers are incentivised with employee stock ownership plans (Esops). But in South Africa, competition authorities are increasingly using such schemes as a stick to facilitate a greater redistribution of wealth and promote economic parity.
