In a landmark ruling, the Administrative Court in London has refused an application by Uber to declare its controversial gig-economy business model lawful.

The ruling will ease the path of all private-hire drivers seeking to access their worker rights and deal a further blow to ride-hailing companies that argue drivers are self-employed contractors.

The decision also means that platforms, rather than individual drivers, will enter into contracts directly with passengers and be held liable for the service.
