Although it has become more broadly representative of the population over recent years, barriers to the legal profession remain. University-educated lawyers from the highest socio-economic backgrounds continue to dominate the upper echelons of the world’s largest and most prestigious law firms. But things are changing.

Introduced in 2015 to improve social mobility within the sector, some hope solicitor apprenticeships will herald a sea change in the way aspiring lawyers can qualify in England.
