Japan’s Constitution protects the right of workers to form a union and take collective action. But despite making up around two-in-five workers, part-time and temporary workers have rarely exercised that right. Until now.

Late last year, three Starbucks employees formed the company’s first union in Japan. The move followed the coffee giant’s refusal to increase wages and improve working conditions in its Japanese stores.
