US lawmakers have introduced a bipartisan bill that would increase penalties for child labour violations, heeding a call from the Department of Labor earlier this month to boost its fining powers and deter child exploitation by businesses.

The bill, introduced in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, follows a similar Democrat-led effort in the Senate. In addition to raising civil fines, the Senate bill would also impose stronger criminal penalties for repeat or wilful violations.
