A recent ruling by the Beijing People’s Court has once again put the issue of overtime work in China in the spotlight, this time in relation to out-of-hours social media use.
The court ruled in favour of Li Xiaoyuan, a former employee of a technology company, who sued her employer for outstanding overtime pay related to after-hours work on WeChat, China’s popular messaging app.
The court ordered the employer to compensate Li with 30,000 yuan ($4,362) for clocking up more than 500 hours of work done during non-office hours.
