In China, known for its often long working hours culture that leaves workers exhausted and demoralised, a supermarket has introduced ten days “unhappiness leave” for staff.

Yu Donglai, owner of 13 Pang Dong Lai stores in Henan province, told delegates at the China Supermarket Week conference last month that his employees are entitled to additional leave when not at their emotional or mental best. Under the policy staff can request leave at any time.
