The UK government plans to allow businesses impacted by strikes to use temporary agency staff to replace essential workers during industrial action.

The repeal of existing law comes as tens of thousands of rail workers, represented by the RMT union, strike this week over job cuts, pay, conditions, and pensions.

Under current trade union laws, businesses are restricted from supplying temporary agency workers to fill duties by employees who are taking part in strikes. The government says this can have a “disproportionate impact” on public services and the economy.
