Uber has struck a deal with Australia’s Transport Workers Union (TWU) to back employment standards and minimum wages for its workers, ahead of planned reforms of the gig economy promised by the new federal government.

The agreement, completed this week, is the first time a platform company in Australia has signed a deal with a union across both its rideshare and food delivery businesses.

Uber and the TWU have pledged to jointly support the federal government in legislating for an independent body that will create industry-wide standards for gig workers.
