Björn Gaul studied Law at the University of Cologne, where he was also a research assistant and received his PhD in 1993 and his postdoctoral qualification to be appointed as extraordinary professor (Habilitation) with venia legendi for civil law, commercial law and labour law in 2001. Björn has been a Partner at CMS Hasche Sigle since 2000

Björn Gaul has extensive experience in advising German and international companies on corporate restructurings, business outsourcings, changes of collective bargaining agreements, flexible staff deployment and staff cuts. He also advises on the introduction of IT systems and more flexible working hours, regulations on mobile work, salary-structure adjustments, and setting up and developing compliance and whistleblowing policies.

Björn is a trusted advisor for management and advisory boards, working with them on employee participation, European Works Councils and the foundation and modification of European companies (SE, SCE). Alongside his advisory work, he also chairs the supervisory board of a logistics company.

Björn is consistently named as one of the leading employment lawyers in the German market. He is described as a "genius in employment law" (Chambers), a "figurehead in labour law" (Legal 500 EMEA), a "font of knowledge in all areas of practice, especially collective bargaining agreement negotiations and restructuring" (Who's Who Legal), and "brilliant" (JUVE). He was named best labour lawyer in Germany 2020 by Wirtschaftswoche (Legal All Star 2020), was in 2021 recognised for the 10th time in a row as one of the German leading HR Experts (40 Köpfe) by personalmagazin and is regularly ranked in overviews for the German Legal Market. Thus, Björn is a pre-eminent figure in the German labour and employment space, where he eclipses peers with his exceptional work on outsourcing projects, reorganisations, and collective bargaining agreements (Who’s Who Legal).
