India pre-empts gig economy disputes with recommendations for growing sector

India’s gig economy firms should provide workers with social and welfare support, financial assistance, and upskilling opportunities, a government-backed think-tank has recommended, as the nation looks to pre-empt sector challenges seen elsewhere around the globe.

There are around 7.7 million workers in India’s gig economy, around 1.5% of the country’s total workforce. That number is expected to more than treble to 23.5 million by 2030, according to the government’s apex public policy think-tank, NITI Aayog.
