New covid restrictions are to be implemented in England following the rapid spread of the omicron variant in the UK, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced.

The latest data suggests the omicron, first identified by experts in South Africa, may be more transmissible than other variants of the novel coronavirus.

There are now 568 cases confirmed across the UK and early analysis from the UK Health Security Agency suggests this number could double every two to three days.
