TSMPs employment department is led by the well-regarded Ian Lim. It is regularly instructed by multinational corporates and international law firms to assist with the Singaporean aspects of multi-jurisdictional projects, including those involving Central Asian jurisdictions.

The department boasts expertise across the entire spectrum of employment law matters, and also offers pro bono services for employees in public interest cases.

The team is regularly appointed to assist with the employment aspects of corporate transactions, from workforce transfers through to retrenchments and redundancies resulting from business unit closures or operational downsizing.

For example, the group advised Singapore Life on its merger with Aviva, including its employee share option plan (ESOP), transfer of employees, and benefits harmonisation.

The group is also well placed to assist with internal investigations into misconduct allegations, disciplinary proceedings and employment suspensions, including those resulting from whistleblowing claims.

This experience was key in the groups advice to TEHO International on an investigation into corporate fraud and misconduct at its subsidiary TEHO Water. In addition, the firm represented the client at the Singapore High Court in a claim against an ex-managing director, relating to breaches of restrictive covenants, fiduciary duties, and copyright.

The groups prowess in contentious matters was also displayed in its representation of Lightnet at the High Court. Two former employees filed the lawsuit over Lightnets alleged failure to pay them cryptocurrencies due under their employment contract, raising questions relating to incentives plans, non-variation clauses in the contract, and whether monetary compensation was owed if the value of the cryptocurrency had changed between when the payment was due and when it was made.

Another area of expertise is industrial relations, for which the team is sought-after to assist with union negotiations, collective agreements, and proceedings at the Industrial Arbitration Court. In addition, the team regularly handles immigration matters.
