IEL Elite
Top-tier international firm
Overview
Repeatedly highlighted by peers as a major player, DLA Piper is able to advise on the full gamut of employment law matters – with a particularly impressive ability to service multi-jurisdictional issues owing to its extensive global footprint.
Brian S Kaplan, who splits his time between New Jersey and New York, and Pilar Menor in Madrid co-lead the department, which spans the Americas, Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Menor was singled out in IEL’s 2022 Women Leaders survey.
Keiji Nasuda in Tokyo, Emma Mills in Manchester, and Monique Jefferson in Johannesburg were all made partner in May 2022, further deepening the strength of the team’s bench.
Specialisms
The department offers advisory and transactional services to a host of leading clients, from contract reviews through to M&A, outsourcing, or business-critical issues, such as expansions or reductions in workforces.
In particular, the team is able to leverage its extensive global network to act on large cross-border projects. For example, the department advised Dyson on the final phase of a global policy review that spanned 33 jurisdictions. In another example, UK-based partner Sandra Wallace acted for the London Stock Exchange on a 64-jurisdiction employment contract review.
As part of its offering in the corporate transactions space, the team is well placed to assist with negotiations with works councils or unions to facilitate employee transfer or redundancy schemes.
Of late, notable work has also included advice with relation to the covid-19 status of employees, or gig economy workers. The team demonstrates further prowess in ESG issues, particularly those with a human rights angle – including internal protocols and supply chain assessments.
Other areas of activity include whistleblowing schemes, litigation support, data protection and privacy, and issues surrounding restrictive covenants and benefits schemes.
