SA firms’ zero-tolerance drug policies may need review

South African conglomerate Barloworld has been ordered by the Labour Appeal Court to pay more than R1 million (£42,500) in back wages to a former employee dismissed for consuming medical marijuana after hours, in a landmark decision earlier this month.

Bernadette Enever filed an appeal against Barloworld South Africa’s decision to dismiss her on 20 April 2020, for failing to abide by their zero-approach policy to drugs and alcohol.
